For Stek Magazine I made these DIY Photoholders with marble effect. They’re great for little postcards, polaroids or business cards! Once you get the hang of it, this is a pretty easy & quick DIY project.
This is what you need:
– Plaster
– A silicone ice cube tray
– Metal wire
– Plastic bowls
– Skewers
– Nailpolish
– Pliers & Wire cutter
Step 1:
Make a little bowl with plaster by following the instructions on the packaging. Use a plastic bowl that you can throw away later. Put the plaster into a pouring cup and leave it for a couple of minutes. Pour the plaster into the ice cube tray & again leave it for a couple of minutes.
Step 2:
In the meantime you can make the wire clips. Cut of a piece of wire at about 15 centimeters. Make a double circle or heart (or another shape you like) with the pliers so you’ll get sort of a clip to hold a card or a picture. Prick the wire clips into the plaster cubes and leave it to dry. When the plaster is completely dry you can push the cubes carefully out of the tray.
Step 3:
Pick out your favorite colors of nail polish. Put some hot water in a plastic bowl and pour a little bit of nail polish into the water. Keep the bottle close to the water, otherwise the nail polish will sink immediately to the bottom of the bowl. Now take a skewer and quickly stir the nail polish. Dip the plaster cube into the nail polish and take it out right away. Now leave it to dry upside down. If everything goes right, the nail polish creates kind of a marble effect!
Step 4:
When everything is completely dry, you’re done! Collect your favorite (polaroid) pictures or postcards & place them into the wire clips. These Marble Dipped Photoholders are great on your desk or even in the kitchen with a little recipe!
